Mom Lights Up Seeing Her Boisterous Sons Look Like Angels

North Wales Family Photographer

Katy, who is not only a full time working mom but is also in a doctorate level academic program, knows her time with her sons is precious, which is why we truly appreciate her making the time to bring her boys in for a Renaissance session.

“We keep a very busy schedule so the time we spend together is precious,” says Katy.

Philadelphia Family Portraits

When she’s not working or studying, Katy enjoys building block towers and art projects like coloring and playing hockey outside with her three year old and her nearly two year old.

Classic Children's Portraits

Katy had seen some of the photos of families and children from our Renaissance sessions and she became quickly convinced that she needed to do a session with her boys.

“I saw some of the photos online and loved the look of them as true art, like a painting.  They were beautiful and like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The renaissance photos looked like actual paintings in a museum,” she shared with us.

Blue Bell Family Photographer

The day of the session Katy says she was excited but had some nerves, as she knows how tricky it can be to photograph young children! She was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly the session went.

Mom and Child Professional Portraits

“The session far exceeded my expectations. Working with children can be stressful and you are wanting to have them look cute and smile, and sometimes they just don’t want to cooperate.  Erika was very gracious and could not have been sweeter with my boys. We really had a fun time and they kids were laughing with Erika and thought she was a blast. She really exceeded my expectations of patience and grace. And of course the photos came out wonderful!”

Some of her favorite photos wound up being the ones where her boys were caught in the moment just being silly and laughing.

“You can’t deny the innocence and smile of a child. Seeing my boys portrayed as angels was perfect.”

She also loves the ones where each of her boys is giving her a kiss.

“It just makes me shine on the inside. To see that they love me and I love them and to have it captured is really special. Sometimes the mom is the picture taker instead of the subject, so this was really nice to have some pictures of me with my boys.”

Katy is so happy to have some lasting memories documented that they can look back on.

Montgomery County Family Photography

“I just wanted to have something like this to have to look back on the time when my babies were little. In the end, I purchased an album because there were just so many images I wanted to have forever. I picked it up yesterday and it is beautiful. I’ll cherish it all my life,” she said.

Katy had such a positive experience with us she says she can’t wait to return for future sessions!

Cathartic Moments Suspended In Time For Puzzle Piece Family

Stephanie fondly calls her family “our puzzle-piece family.” Her two girls, who are 9 and 10, were born in Ireland to their Irish father. When her husband passed away in 2015, Stephanie and her girls moved to the States (New Jersey), where she soon met her now fiancé Rich. The two dated for a year before Stephanie felt it was time to introduce him to her daughters.

Renaissance Family Photoshoot

“I wanted to make sure it was right before he met them after everything they had been through,” she said.

It didn’t take long for Rich to bond with the girls and much of it was done while he looked after them so Stephanie could complete her studying and schooling for Massage Therapy.

Dad Snuggles Children Photoshoot

Then, a little over a year after he met and fell in love with the girls, Rich was suddenly diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“It was scary and devastating because we had no idea what the outcome was going to be. We were due to get our first proper photos together that year but his hair fell out from the chemo so we held off-he hated how he looked without hair,” said Stephanie.

Dad and Daughter

Thankfully, shortly after Christmas 2019 Rich was given a clean bill of health. The cancer scare only fueled their desire for photos together even more.

“Once I started seeing the photos being created for the Renaissance of Mom, I knew that was something we needed to be a part of. We wanted so desperately to have “real” photos together; we didn’t have any nice photos of the four of us. After all we had been through, it was definitely time to celebrate our puzzle piece family.”

Laughing Family Candid Photos

She continued, “We have become so close, so essential to each other. I took care of him. He took care of the girls as I went through school. He’s taken sick days for them and comforted them while they were still very raw in their grief over their father. Some days I feel like he is our second chance at life. I didn’t really believe we could truly ever be happy again after their Dad passed away. But here we are. He said he has spent many nights being grateful that he has been given the gift of us, even though it was through tragedy.”

Mom and Daughter

After a few more postponements due to snow, we finally got the four of them into the studio for their long awaited session.

“Erika instantly became a friend. When the day finally came I couldn’t help but hug her when we met in person. We just sort of fell into playing around and joking around. That’s when she started shooting.”

Mom and Daughter Hands Together

As Erika took their photos, Stephanie says moments like watching her beautiful girls laughing and looking lovingly at Rich are now suspended in time for her.

Beautiful Children's Portraits, Philadelphia Photographer

“I remember Rich having an especially quiet and beautiful moment with our youngest in his lap and Erika turned around to look at me…we were both crying…then of course at that moment the oldest farted and we all erupted in fits of laughter. Kids really know how to interrupt a serious moment!”

Precious Moments, North Wales Family Photographer

Stephanie added that, like most moms, she rarely sees herself in photos with her babies.

“I’m one of those moms who is never in photos. Accepting that even though I don’t look perfect…I am beautiful as I live within the joy and love in my perfectly imperfect family.”

Montgomery Family Photoshoots

When it came to their photo reveal, Stephanie says she sobbed uncontrollable, cathartic tears.

Sisters Renaissance Family Portraits

“It was like this physical turning of a page…having gone through such deep grief of losing a spouse, then finding love again and fearing losing him to cancer, all the while watching my girls grow and experience such pain that no children should ever know…to finally being ok. Happy and healthy, all of us.”

Sun Crown Children's Portraits

The family selected some of their favorite prints and plan to purchase more in the future after their wedding this fall. (Fittingly after their Renaissance session, they will be married at the Renaissance Faire in Manheim, PA.”

Laughing and Dancing Family Photos in North Wales

“This shoot was just so unique and perfect. The Renaissance style completely broke the mold of traditional and mundane family photos. The photos Erika took speak volumes of love, passion, and life. I could’ve spent an eternity in that day…laughing and not worrying about a thing. I can’t thank her or Allebach enough. We will treasure these photos for years to come! Thank you so very much.”

Montgomery County Family Photo Session

North Wales Renaissance Family Portraits

Back when we were known as the Tattooed Bride Photography Studio, Laura followed our Facebook page and got to be a part of a “tattooed stories” model call. So much has changed since 2015, especially for Laura and Glen who now have 2 beautiful kids; Emma and Benjamin.

Brother and Sister Family Photography

When we launched the model call for the Renaissance of Mom, Laura was nervous but excited. Once the session started, Laura let all those nerves go.

“I really felt beautiful and comfortable as soon as we all got changed and the shoot started!”

Tiny Queen Renaissance Portraits

“Getting to experience [the shoot] first hand after seeing so many other’s photos, it was so fun! We got to listen to music and be silly and be ourselves….it was less posed than I had anticipated but the results were amazing!”, Laura shared.

Tiny King Renaissance Portraits

When the family first saw the images, they were blown away.

“It looked like our family just popped out of a magazine! I thought ‘how am I going to choose which ones go on the wall?!’ And seriously how are these so incredible?!”

Dancing Daughter Philadelphia Family Photography

One of the best parts of the experience for Laura was how it changed her relationship with her husband, Glen.

“I felt it brought my husband and I closer even though it was a family shoot, because he was so nervous and didn’t want to do the photos at first, then after the experience he raved about how fun and amazing it was and how amazing the photos were!”

Dad and Son Family Portraits

“They are beautiful memories that you will literally have forever! Money comes and goes, but these gorgeous memories cannot be replaced, it’s literally like a beautiful amazing snap shot in time in your life”, Laura added.

9 Reasons A Family Session Is The Best Gift

If you have children, I’m sure you’ve noticed how fleeting moments are and how quickly they change. Capture all those small but precious quirks they possess or things they do that remind you how special they are, right now, in this moment.

You may live together, and/or spend a lot of time together. But when was the last time you truly spent quality time loving and appreciating one another? Photo sessions are a chance to slow down and just be present with each other.

The value of family portraits increase with time. Lots of gifts are exchanged, opened, appreciated, adored, and then forgotten. A photograph created now, is priceless and precious twenty, even thirty years from now. A window to the past, crystal clear.

It’s sad to say but aging really takes a toll on memory. Our elderly relatives, and us as we continue to age, will have the opportunity to look back upon happy memories. Time-traveling brought to fruition.

What better way to say “I Love You” than a photographic love letter. As your children age, leave the nest, and grow their own families, they can channel your love through those special moments frozen in time.

This one goes out to all those people who are great at taking the photos, but never end up IN the photos. I’m certainly one of those, and as a photographer, I can’t rave enough about how important it was to have my own session. Yes, that’s me below!

There is a lot of beautiful artwork out there to decorate your home and it can be overwhelming to decide what fits your style best. That’s the beauty of photos! They can be designed to match your aesthetic. It couldn’t be a more custom piece of art, nor could it be more meaningful.

Now, more than ever before, you just never know the next time you’ll see someone you care about. Capture the love and connection you share, so you can always be transported there when you need it most.

One of our favorite parts of these experiences is getting to know our clients and all about how they spend time as a family. They become a chance to have fun and be unapologetically yourselves. Sure, we do a little bit of posing to set it up, but at the end of the day, we capture who you are as a family. So be silly, dance a little, laugh a lot, sing loud, and hold onto each other tightly.

Celebrate Breastfeeding

Hello! I’m Erika, a mother of two breast and bottle fed children. I remember thinking, early on in both pregnancies, how badly I wanted to breastfeed for the first year of my children’s lives. It was a journey I knew would be difficult, but it was one I was committed to.

Neither of my kids made it to 6 months. It was REALLY hard to keep up with, even with pumping constantly. My biggest challenge was, I had no time off. No real maternity leave at my previous job. With my first born, I had only 6 paid days off, then I had to work from home 32 hours a week. I tried to breastfeed at my desk but it was almost impossible to keep up with.

With no government mandated support for paid maternity leave, I had no choice but to end my journey with breastfeeding in order to keep my sanity. And my second born was no different.

So why am I telling you all of this? This isn’t to get you to feel bad for me. Not at all. My children are healthy and I kept my sanity with the decisions I made.

I am posting this because it’s World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month. I want to honor all of the mamas out there on their breastfeeding journey. I want to help normalize breastfeeding, end the stigma of doing so in public spaces, and donate to a cause that is working to support mothers from pregnancy through their child’s second birthday, via 1000 Days.

“The first 1,000 days are a time of tremendous potential and enormous vulnerability. How well or how poorly mothers and children are nourished and cared for during this time has a profound impact on a child’s ability to grow, learn and thrive. This is because the first 1,000 days are when a child’s brain begins to grow and develop and when the foundations for their lifelong health are built.

Studies show that countries that fail to invest in the well-being of women and children in the first 1,000 days lose billions of dollars to lower economic productivity and higher health costs. It is why several of the world’s leading economists have called for greater investments in the nutrition and well-being of mothers, babies, and toddlers as a way to create brighter and more prosperous futures for us all.

Through the month of August, we will be donating $100 per breastfeeding/family session booked to 1000 Days to support their mission investing in the well-being of mothers and their children.

Share your journey with me!

Unbreakable Bond

I remember the first time I read Gemma’s story, I knew immediately that this experience would be important for her to have.

Liam is her world. Her sun, her moon, and her stars. He is there for her when she needs an emotional anchor and he also knows when she needs a moment alone.

I remember her describing him as a true gentleman and even calling him a “little mayor” and the moment I met him, I understood what she meant. He has a gentle confidence about him that can command a room and calm a soul.

They are truly lucky to have each other and it was an incredible honor to capture portraits showing their love, care, affection, and respect for one another. Sometimes it’s hard to meet a child, or a parent, where they are emotionally, but Gemma and Liam have that down pat!

Beauty & Science

When Yana emailed to have her Renaissance of Mom portrait done, I was ecstatic! Her and her husband, Ryan, had come in previously for couples boudoir with Mike, so I was already familiar with how fun loving they are.

Emma was a total delight to photograph. She loved having her portraits done and her eyes sparkled when I showed her the images we captured.

By far, my favorite part about photographing this amazing family was when we got to recreate one of Emma’s favorites things to do.

SCIENCE!

Seeing Emma’s eyes light up when the volcano erupted was magical! Her exploration of science has only just begun and I can’t wait to hear of all the amazing things she will do with that curiosity!

Celebrating Single Moms

When Allison shared her story with me, I knew this experience would mean a lot to her. Raising children on your own is never easy, let alone three boys! Speaking with her, I knew she was a total badass super mom. She’s surely got her hands full and she’s a pro; but we were stoked to help her wrangle these little munchkins for their photos.

“I was hoping to just enjoy the experience and not worry about looking posed or getting something “perfect.” The truth is my life is insane with three little boys and if that’s what the photos showed, I would be happy with it!”

“Everyone made it easy to wrangle three very energetic boys and not put pressure on me or them.”

Allison, it was our pleasure!

The Renaissance of Sisterhood

I met Ashley through her sister, Eryn, who is a wonderful friend of mine. I even flew out to Detroit last year to photograph Ashley’s family! That trip was actually a pivotal moment in my life that lead me to working here at Allebach Photography, so her presence in my life will always be precious to me.

When we launched the Renaissance of Mom, I was ecstatic Ashley responded.

“I have always been the little big sister. The little sister that tried to plan my big sister’s life because obviously I knew better. When she and her husband had a baby, that is where our roles and relationship changed.”

“My sister Eryn made pregnancy make sense. We bonded and got closer than ever and she became the big sister. She became who I leaned on, who I trusted when the stress got to me, who I looked to, to help make things less confusing.

“We are closer and stronger now than ever and want our boys to feel the same. Our sons, upon their first meeting and thereafter, grab hands and light up when they see each other. They have a bond we want to foster until the day we can’t anymore and I want to cherish all moments where they are together.”

Photographing Ashley and Eryn with their boys was one of the most beautiful and emotional sessions for me. I love them both dearly, they are like family to me, but seeing their bond and the love Bash and Addy have for each other is an experience I know they will cherish for a lifetime. Being a part of this is certainly something I will cherish.

The Renaissance of Motherhood

I remember speaking to Vanessa on the phone about her pregnancy and raising three children, as well as being a stepmom to teenage son. I thought to myself, “How does she do it?” Both Vanessa and her husband are in the military and she is raising their children through such a tough job. To say I was impressed by her is an understatement and I knew how important this experience was going to be for her.

“I was pregnant with my 4th and last baby and determined to get beautiful pictures that captured the beauty and power of motherhood. Knowing I’ll never experience pregnancy again, this photoshoot was extremely important to me. I wanted to capture my family and body in its current state so that I could look back on it years from now when my kids are grown up and be reminded of this incredibly special time.”

“My kids are 5, 3, and 2 and I know how challenging it is to get even one good picture of them. Erika’s energy and playfulness really got them to open up and feel comfortable which resulted in beautiful, natural moments captured on camera! The results were better than I could have hoped for!”

“My favorite part of the whole experience was the reveal at the end of the photo shoot. Seeing myself on the screen looking so regal was one thing, but then seeing the amazing pictures of my babies with Taylor Swifts “Never Grow Up” as the soundtrack was too much to handle, my husband and I both choked back the tears.”

Are those cute Snapchat filters actually making us feel worse about our bodies?

Are those cute Snapchat filters actually making us feel worse about our bodies?

By Christine Wolkin

We live in a world where beauty standards are constantly evolving and now, with filters that can remove freckles, lengthen eyelashes and widen our eyes, edited selfies have become the norm.

Medical professionals are beginning to argue that those Snapchat filters that transform our faces into cute little woodland creatures with big eyes and smooth skin are hurting our self-image in bigger ways than we could ever imagine.

“A new phenomenon called ‘Snapchat dysmorphia’ has popped up, where patients are seeking out surgery to help them appear like the filtered version of themselves,” says Neelam Vashi, director of Ethnic Skin Center at BMC and Boston University School of Medicine.

Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine’s Department of Dermatology recently published an article in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, delving into how selfies and filters can negatively affect our body image and trigger body dysmorphia, a mental disorder that causes people to be extremely preoccupied with a perceived flaw in appearance that to others can’t be seen or appears minor.

People who have BDD tend to obsess over their appearance and body image, often checking the mirror, grooming or seeking reassurance for many hours a day.

“For someone with BDD, their entire life’s balance hangs on whether they look okay or whether they’ve camouflaged their perceived flaw appropriately,” says Tom Hildebrandt, PsyD, chief of the Division of Eating and Weight Disorders at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City.

Individuals that suffer from BDD will often go to great, and often unhealthy, lengths to hide their imperfections, including going under the knife.

In 2017, a survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that 55 percent of surgeons reported seeing patients who requested surgery to look better in selfies.

“Today’s generation can’t escape ‘the Truman effect’ because from birth they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look or how great these images are,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho, who coined the term “Snapchat dysmorphia” earlier this year in 2018.

The JAMA article goes on to state that this alarming trend presents an unattainable look and blurs the line of reality and fantasy for us.

“Filtered selfies can make people lose touch with reality, creating the expectation that we are supposed to look perfectly primped all the time,” says Vashi, who is also one of the authors of the article. “This can be especially harmful to teens and those with BDD and it is important for providers to understand the implications of social media on body image to better treat and counsel our patients.”

Looking at a photo of yourself and not seeing the same thing reflected in the mirror or an unedited photo can make people unhappy, says Vashi.

“It can bring feelings of sadness, and then if one really develops this disorder, that sadness clearly progresses to something that can be dangerous and alarming,” she said.

Approximately 80 percent of people that suffer from BBD suffer from suicidal thoughts and about a quarter of those individuals have attempted suicide, according to a 2007 study by Primary Psychiatry.

Vashi says one of the most powerful tools in helping fight “Snapchat dysmorphia” is awareness, either through cognitive behavioral therapy or by simply changing your negative thought patterns. Simply being aware of what’s real and what’s been heavily altered with photo manipulation tools can ground us back to reality and remind us of our own innate beauty.

While posing with these filters can be fun, it’s important not to lose sight of who you really are behind them. Photo editing has been around for hundreds of years now and while digital manipulation and our high standards for beauty aren’t likely to go away anytime soon, we are the ones that allow them to hold any power over ourselves.

If you’re looking to capture your true beauty, ditch the filters altogether. Put on a favorite article of clothing and head outside for some gorgeous natural lighting.

Better yet, contact us at Allebach Photography to capture your true natural beauty, inside and out. We offer couples boudoir, boudoir, headshot, wedding, engagement and family photos and are located in the Philadelphia suburbs. Lady’s Goodbye: Just a Few More Moments

Allebach Photography

Lady was our first baby. Of course she was the kind with fur. Part pit bull and the other part people would remark “that Target dog” or “Spuds MacKenzie”

She loved being wound up and going into the crazy run. You know, that side ways run dogs do. If you’ve seen it, you’ve wondered how her paws stayed attached. Every year she did that less and less and as our family grew she put up with child belly dog flops and tail grabbing.

On June 6 of this year we brought her into the studio with the family. It was a special photo session. A few weeks prior she was diagnosed with cancer that had progressed too far. Nothing could be done to treat the cancer.

So we photographed – a few more moments with Lady.allebach photography, dog, lady
