All The Questions You’ve Ever Had About Headshots, Answered

Team group headshots

I’ll be honest – I let way too much time go between my last professional headshot and the one I just got done at Allebach. As in the last “professional” headshot I had taken was by a fellow photographer friend in my senior year of college. They say you shouldn’t go more than 2, 5 years max between updating your headshot so I guess I was pushing it with 13 years!

What can I use my headshot for?

In today’s digital world there are so many reasons to have a headshot (which is basically just a professional photo of your face). Whether your LinkedIn profile could use a refresh or you’re an actor, model, CEO, blogger, or just a human who needs a great photo for your social or dating profile, a great headshot these days is a must.

What should I wear for my headshot?

The general rule of thumb is you’ll want to look both neat and presentable, like you’re coming in for a job interview. For men, it’s hard to go wrong with a collared shirt and tie. Whereas for women, a blazer, a pair of slacks or a dress are always safe bets. Avoid flashy patterns and statement jewelry. That said, it’s important to ask yourself how you plan on using these photos and what part of your personality you want to highlight. If this is for your LinkedIn profile, then by all means, wear that suit. But if you plan on throwing this up on your dating profiles, a more relaxed, easygoing look should do the trick!

What should I do with my hair for my headshot?

We recommend styling your hair in its natural state or going for a simple, neat look. Trim the facial hair. Pull back and loose bangs. And don’t try anything too different. You wouldn’t want to experiment with a new hairstyle or color and then snag an interview and show up looking unrecognizable!

I’m awkward in front of the camera, how do I pose?

First of all, relax. You’re in good hands. We will direct you, using our expertise in lighting and angles, we will find those angles that represent you best. But truly, the biggest tip we can offer is to relax. Shrug your shoulders in between takes. Stretch, smile. Be your comfortable, confident self!

How long will it take?

Allebach’s studio headshots tend to take roughly a half hour of shooting (not including your final reveal). You’ll be in and out before you know it. The typical turnaround time for your fully retouched headshots is about a day or two.
