I can say \u201cI love you,\u201d with ease in the morning to my husband before he leaves for work. Hell, I even tell my dogs how much I love them on a daily basis. But to tell myself \u201cI love you?\u201d I have to admit &#8211; my first thought was this sounds a little narcissistic. And my second thought was even worse. \u201cWhy should you love yourself?\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mirror work \u2013 also known as the mirror exercise, mirror technique and mirror gazing \u2013 is a powerful tool for building self-love and one that I have to admit sounded too silly and too easy to work.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"859\" height=\"1300\" src=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3406-859x1300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3406-859x1300.jpg 859w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3406-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3406-768x1163.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3406-1015x1536.jpg 1015w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3406-scaled.jpg 1353w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3406-1189x1800.jpg 1189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 859px) 100vw, 859px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of us when we look in a mirror we criticize ourselves, make fun of ourselves. We say derogatory things to ourselves. It\u2019s a habit. The mirror, as small as it may be, can really help you connect with yourself,\u201d says Louise Hay, author and self-help advocate.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is simple; you stand in front of a mirror, stare deeply into your own eyes, and say to yourself, \u201cI love you.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are all sorts of variations to this practice. You can repeat those words over and over again to yourself, or you can add positive affirmations like \u201cI am enough,\u201d or \u201cI am beautiful in my own skin.\u201d You can talk to yourself like you would an old friend &#8211; positive self-talk is the key to this practice.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1210\" height=\"1300\" src=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3407-1210x1300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3407-1210x1300.jpg 1210w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3407-279x300.jpg 279w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3407-768x825.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3407-1429x1536.jpg 1429w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3407-scaled.jpg 1906w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3407-1200x1290.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1210px) 100vw, 1210px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to start with the mirror exercise first thing in the morning because they say that\u2019s when your mind is the most susceptible. First thing in the morning, by the way for me, meant disheveled bed head, pajamas, and no makeup.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stood in front of our full-length mirror and took a breath, already starting to criticize my pores, untamed baby hairs, and saggy chest. All that in just a matter of seconds!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love you,\u201d I whispered, not in the mood to be overheard by my husband and having to explain myself.&nbsp; \u201cI love you,\u201d I say again a little louder this time, looking into my eyes. I cocked my head and made a dumb face at myself. This seems silly. I repeat those words a few more times before deciding to tell myself just what I love, or at least like, about myself.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1258\" src=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3409-1800x1258.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3409-1800x1258.jpg 1800w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3409-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3409-768x537.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3409-1536x1074.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3409-scaled.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3409-1200x839.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1800px) 100vw, 1800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love your soft, fine hair.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love the shape of your ears.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love the multi-colors of your eyes.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love that you don\u2019t take yourself too seriously.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love that, even though you sort of hate the way your breasts look right now, you are putting your son\u2019s health first by nourishing him with them.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it was nice to acknowledge some of my surface traits (like my hair and eyes), what struck the biggest chord with me was when I dug a little deeper and looked at what my body does for me and for others.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love that not only do you have cute ears, but those ears help you to hear the world around you, like your son\u2019s belly laugh!\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love that not only are your eyes a fun kaleidoscope of colors, but they also help you see and navigate a beautiful world!\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"975\" height=\"1300\" src=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3414-975x1300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3414-975x1300.jpg 975w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3414-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3414-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3414-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3414-scaled.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/allebachphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3414-1200x1600.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I left our mirror feeling a little goofy, but nonetheless happier with myself and ready to move forward with my day.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of the mirror exercise is not to become self-centered or narcissistic, I realized, it\u2019s about being thankful for your body and developing a healthy self-perception.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I started off small with my exercise, I plan to continue on a daily schedule, moving first from loving my outside to then focusing on what\u2019s inside.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>Christine Wolkin is a freelance writer and writes for Allebach Photography.
